Academic Writing Is An Analysis Of Specific Academic Subject

Academic writing is an analysis of specific academic subject matter and is viewed as a means of promoting understanding of the content (Shih 617). This is done by using deductive reasoning, semiformal voice, and third person point-of-view. Deductive reasoning is stating the thesis early and then following it with supporting examples and details that help readers understand complicated ideas. When writing in semiformal voice, the writer is not using slang, colloquialism, or contractions of nouns and verbs. Academic writing is written in third person points-of-view and should never include first and second person points-of-view. The abstract is usually a one or two paragraph concise detailed summary of the whole report. It includes what the objectives of the study were, a brief statement of what was done, what was found, and what was concluded from the experiment. The introduction gives focus to the report and it should also put the experiment into context to provide the reader with the information necessary to understand the scientific basis of the experiment and the techniques that were used. This is where you will where you will justify your hypotheses. Background information and the theory behind the techniques used are also in the introduction section of the lab report. The methods/procedure section of the laboratory report is used to describe all experimental procedures well enough that anyone could repeat the experiment. This section explains the general type of scientific procedures that are used to study the problem. It describes what materials, subjects, and equipment is used in the experiment and explains the steps that were taken. The results section of the laboratory report is where scientists present all the results, including those that do not support the hypothesis.
